Twelve health systems. More than 15,000 doctors. One goal.

Twelve of North Carolina’s largest healthcare systems in partnership with Presbyterian Healthcare Services, serving New Mexico managed Medicaid members for more than 30 years, knew they could collaborate and partner with the state, providers and our communities to improve the health of Medicaid recipients and create an innovative, whole person centered, and well-coordinated system of care. As mission-based health systems and owners of My Health by Health Providers, we believe that providers must be part of the solution and whether it is our health systems or our health plan, we remain committed to our communities.

The Power

Mission Statement:

To improve Health, elevate Hope, and advance Healing—for all.

Atrium Health’s roots date back to 1940 when a group of ambitious, young clinicians, not being satisfied with the services available to the public, relentlessly lobbied for a new hospital to better meet the needs of the community. Over time, the System has evolved from these simple roots. Today, nearly 80 years later, we’re proud to be known as one of the nation’s leading health organizations, providing a full spectrum of healthcare and wellness programs throughout the Southeast region. Its diverse network of care locations includes academic medical centers, hospitals, freestanding emergency departments, physician practices, surgical and rehabilitation centers, home health agencies, nursing homes and behavioral health centers, as well as hospice and palliative care services. Atrium Health works to enhance the overall health and well-being of its communities through high-quality patient care, education and research programs, and numerous collaborative partnerships and initiatives. And our mission, to improve health, elevate hope and advance healing—for all, is forever bound to our rich heritage.

"At Atrium Health, everything we do is centered around our mission to improve health, elevate hope and advance healing - for all. Mission Statement:

To provide compassionate, exceptional and highly reliable care.

At the close of World War II, the Gaston County business community began raising funds with the intent of establishing a community hospital. Prominent community members contributed time and resources and textile workers pledged a full day’s wage to the initiative. All recognized the need to provide healthcare to citizens but also provide support to Veterans returning home after the war. In 1946, Gaston Memorial Hospital welcomed its first patients.

As services expanded and the community grew, the hospital relocated to its current facility in 1973. Eleven years later, a reorganization process helped to establish the hospital as a true health system, integrating advanced medical specialty offerings like comprehensive oncologic, surgical and maternity care. First named Gaston Healthcare, the health system was later rebranded CaroMont Health to better reflect the expanded geographic reach in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. The hospital was subsequently renamed CaroMont Regional Medical Center in 2013.

Today, CaroMont Health, one of only 12 independent health systems in North Carolina, is comprised of a state of the art, 435-bed acute care hospital, freestanding emergency department, inpatient Hospice facility, a 96-bed skilled nursing facility, and a network of 48 primary and specialty physician offices spread across five counties in two states.

With a vision of being the community’s most trusted healthcare partners, CaroMont Health’s unwavering commitment to innovative medicine and compassionate, patient-focused care spans more than 70 years.

“CaroMont Health’s mission to provide compassionate, exceptional and highly reliable care informs every decision we make as a health system. Being included in My Health is important to us as we look to collaborate with other providers unified by one vision to act in the best clinical interest of patients. Access to high-quality, compassionate healthcare on a local level is important to patients served by Medicaid. The partnership helps put patients at the center of the decision-making process, and I believe it will have positive impact in the lives of many in our communities.” - Chris Peek, President & CEO

Mission Statement:

To connect health care and well-being.

In 1911, Bertha Cone established a trust fund to build a hospital as a memorial to her husband Moses who died in 1908. Following her death in 1947, Bertha's share of the family inheritance is directed toward the hospital's founding. On February 25, 1953, The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital opened to the public with 231 employees and 53 of the 310 beds in service with costs of $8 to $20 per day. The first patient, a toddler, was admitted with a respiratory infection. Cone Health has since grown. As one of the region’s largest and most comprehensive health networks, Cone Health has more than 150 locations, including six hospitals, three ambulatory care centers, three outpatient surgical centers, three urgent care centers, a fast-access health care location, two nursing homes, a retirement community, more than 100 physician practice sites and multiple centers of excellence. These include primary and specialty care through Cone Health Medical Group and Triad HealthCare Network.

“Joining this partnership is an affirmation of our strong belief that a provider-led organization is best suited to provide quality health services to Medicaid patients in an effective and efficient manner. By bringing together patients, doctors, hospitals and health systems, we can ensure a sustainable delivery system.” - Terry Akin, CEO

Mission Statement:

Our mission is to improve the health and lives of the people of western North Carolina.

In 1885, a small group of women set out to establish a place in Asheville where the sick and those in need of a home could heal. The result of these four women, known as “The Little Flower Mission,” is Mission Health’s history, the hospitals that preceded it and the city that nurtured it. The Little Flower Mission, led by Miss Anna Woodfin, revolutionized healthcare in western North Carolina as we know it today. The first patient at Mission Hospital was carried from her nearby home on a little borne by two men. Today, critically ill and injured patients from throughout the region may arrive by air ambulance helicopter (better known as MAMA). The four women of the Little Flower Mission couldn’t have imagined their little hospital would result in the modern medical center that serves western North Carolina today. What began with the vision and tenacity of Anna Woodfin, Fanny Patton, Rose Chapman and Lily Carmichael, a staff physician and a matron more than 130 years ago in a five-room house is now a seven-hospital health system with more than 12,000 team members who care for nearly 1 million people in 18 counties every year.

“At Mission Health, we have felt accountable for the health and well-being of our friends and neighbors in western North Carolina for more than 130 years. We know that health can only be achieved when decisions are made by patients, their families and the clinicians they trust. We are delighted to partner with twelve other North Carolina health systems and Presbyterian to support and care for Medicaid beneficiaries. This unique collaboration is the most effective way to continue to do what we have always done: ensuring that we help every person achieve their desired outcome, first without harm, also without waste and always with an exceptional experience for each person, family and team member.” - Ronald Paulus, MD

Mission Statement:

Our mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of North Carolinians and others whom we serve. We accomplish this by providing leadership and excellence in the interrelated areas of patient care, education, and research. We strive to promote faculty, staff and learner development in a diverse, respectful environment where our colleagues demonstrate professionalism, enhance learning, and create personal and professional sustainability. We optimize our partnership with the UNC Health Care System through close collaboration and a commitment to service.

In 1945, the North Carolina Hospital and Medical Care Commission, which the governor appointed to study the woeful state of health, recommended that North Carolina build new community hospitals and modernize existing ones where the need was greatest. The commission also called for expanding the two-year UNC School of Medicine into a four-year school and constructing a large general hospital to affiliate with the medical school.

In 1952, a group of visionaries created a four-year medical school and a hospital. The goal was to persuade the people and their representatives in Raleigh to support an enormously ambitious plan to improve health care by building new hospitals, upgrading old ones and training more doctors.

Overall, the quality of health care, access to health care and health status of North Carolinians have improved immensely over the past 60 years. And UNC Health Care and the UNC School of Medicine have played a crucial role.

“With our mission of improving the health of North Carolinians, partnering with other health care systems seems like a natural collaboration. The concept of a provider-owned plan through My Health by Health Providers aligns perfectly with our charge to be North Carolina’s health care system.” - William Roper, CEO, Dean, UNC School of Medicine
