Cape Fear Valley is the ninth-largest health system in North Carolina with over 6,500 employees and 800 physicians on staff. Our 900-bed regional health system includes eight hospitals and over 70 primary care and specialty clinics throughout Southeastern North Carolina, offering advanced medical facilities and services often found only in larger cities. Our facilities include Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, an acute-care hospital; Hoke County Hospital, an acute care hospital; Highsmith-Rainey Specialty Hospital, a long-term acute-care hospital; Behavioral Health Care, a psychiatric hospital; Cape Fear Valley Rehabilitation Center, a physical rehabilitation hospital; and Bladen County Hospital, a critical-access hospital. Cape Fear Valley Health System also manages Harnett Health System, which is comprised of Betsy Johnson Hospital in Dunn and Central Harnett Hospital in Lillington both Acute Care Hospitals as well as a large primary care network and key specialty clinics.
Cape Fear Valley is a level 3 Trauma center and also provides a regional level 3 Neonatal ICU. We employ the regions EMS infrastructure and as a system is the largest non-governmental employer in our region.
Cape Fear Valley is also recognized nationally for their quality with over 15 disease specific accreditations and certifications.

At the close of World War II, the Gaston County business community began raising funds with the intent of establishing a community hospital. Prominent community members contributed time and resources and textile workers pledged a full day’s wage to the initiative. All recognized the need to provide healthcare to citizens but also provide support to Veterans returning home after the war. In 1946, Gaston Memorial Hospital welcomed its first patients.
As services expanded and the community grew, the hospital relocated to its current facility in 1973. Eleven years later, a reorganization process helped to establish the hospital as a true health system, integrating advanced medical specialty offerings like comprehensive oncologic, surgical and maternity care. First named Gaston Healthcare, the health system was later rebranded CaroMont Health to better reflect the expanded geographic reach in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. The hospital was subsequently renamed CaroMont Regional Medical Center in 2013.
Today, CaroMont Health, one of only 12 independent health systems in North Carolina, is comprised of a state of the art, 435-bed acute care hospital, freestanding emergency department, inpatient Hospice facility, a 96-bed skilled nursing facility, and a network of 48 primary and specialty physician offices spread across five counties in two states.

In 1911, Bertha Cone established a trust fund to build a hospital as a memorial to her husband Moses who died in 1908. Following her death in 1947, Bertha's share of the family inheritance is directed toward the hospital's founding. On February 25, 1953, The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital opened to the public with 231 employees and 53 of the 310 beds in service with costs of $8 to $20 per day. The first patient, a toddler, was admitted with a respiratory infection. Cone Health has since grown. As one of the region’s largest and most comprehensive health networks, Cone Health has more than 150 locations, including six hospitals, three ambulatory care centers, three outpatient surgical centers, three urgent care centers, a fast-access health care location, two nursing homes, a retirement community, more than 100 physician practice sites and multiple centers of excellence. These include primary and specialty care through Cone Health Medical Group and Triad HealthCare Network.

In 1885, a small group of women set out to establish a place in Asheville where the sick and those in need of a home could heal. The result of these four women, known as “The Little Flower Mission,” is Mission Health’s history, the hospitals that preceded it and the city that nurtured it. The Little Flower Mission, led by Miss Anna Woodfin, revolutionized healthcare in western North Carolina as we know it today. The first patient at Mission Hospital was carried from her nearby home on a little borne by two men. Today, critically ill and injured patients from throughout the region may arrive by air ambulance helicopter (better known as MAMA). The four women of the Little Flower Mission couldn’t have imagined their little hospital would result in the modern medical center that serves western North Carolina today. What began with the vision and tenacity of Anna Woodfin, Fanny Patton, Rose Chapman and Lily Carmichael, a staff physician and a matron more than 130 years ago in a five-room house is now a seven-hospital health system with more than 12,000 team members who care for nearly 1 million people in 18 counties every year.

New Hanover Memorial Hospital opened on June 14, 1967, in Wilmington, NC. The medical center is a county-owned, non-profit teaching hospital, regional referral center, Level II trauma center, and UNC School of Medicine branch campus. For 50 years, what is now New Hanover Regional Medical Center has been leading our community to outstanding health by providing specialty medical and surgical care through an 800-bed system that includes women’s and children’s, orthopedic, rehabilitation, and psychiatric hospitals. NHRMC strives to meet the highest standards for quality and has earned numerous national and state recognitions. On a typical day at NHRMC, 395 patients will visit the emergency department; 1,600 will visit NHRMC Physician Group providers, 102 surgeries will be performed, AirLink and VitaLink (our emergency transport services) will transfer 24 patients, 150 patients will be admitted, and 11 babies will be born.

In 1945, the North Carolina Hospital and Medical Care Commission, which the governor appointed to study the woeful state of health, recommended that North Carolina build new community hospitals and modernize existing ones where the need was greatest. The commission also called for expanding the two-year UNC School of Medicine into a four-year school and constructing a large general hospital to affiliate with the medical school.
In 1952, a group of visionaries created a four-year medical school and a hospital. The goal was to persuade the people and their representatives in Raleigh to support an enormously ambitious plan to improve health care by building new hospitals, upgrading old ones and training more doctors.
Overall, the quality of health care, access to health care and health status of North Carolinians have improved immensely over the past 60 years. And UNC Health Care and the UNC School of Medicine have played a crucial role.
