North Carolina Providers Choose Presbyterian Health Plan of New Mexico as Medicaid Partner

Charlotte, N.C. – North Carolina’s leading health systems announced today they have selected a provider-led health plan with extensive experience in Medicaid managed care as a key partner in their collaboration to form a new Prepaid Health Plan for the future Medicaid program.

This effort is in support of the North Carolina General Assembly and Governor’s goal to transform the State’s current Medicaid system to one that provides budget predictability for the taxpayers of the State while ensuring adequate access and high quality of care to those in need.

Presbyterian Health Plan of New Mexico, a provider-led plan owned by Presbyterian Healthcare Services, was selected after a rigorous search process. Presbyterian is the only plan in New Mexico to have served continuously as a Medicaid managed care plan since the inception of the state’s managed Medicaid program in 1997, and today serves more than 30 percent of the state’s Medicaid members.

In December 2015, eleven North Carolina health systems formed a formal partnership called Provider-Led, Patient-Centered Care, LLC (PLPCC) to organize a new Medicaid plan. The health systems are:

  • Cape Fear Valley Health System
  • Carolinas Healthcare System
  • Cone Health
  • Duke University Health System
  • Mission Health System
  • New Hanover Regional Medical Center
  • Novant Health
  • University of North Carolina Health Care
  • Vidant Health
  • Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center
  • WakeMed Health and Hospitals

This collaboration of North Carolina’s prominent healthcare systems recognizes that serving Medicaid patients is a core part of their collective mission. Forming a provider-led plan is a concrete demonstration of their commitment to the long-term health of Medicaid patients, and to the long-term stability of the Medicaid program in the State.

PLPCC and Presbyterian will work together over the next several months to formalize the partnership and begin to build a different model of managed care in North Carolina that provides an exceptional experience for patients and members, and can manage the health of its Medicaid population within a defined budget.

In New Mexico, Presbyterian serves traditional Medicaid and expansion populations, and provides a broad range of services including physical health, behavioral health and long-term care.
